Learn By Doing

Transoranje School is for learners diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss. The main mode of communication and education is South African Sign Language to accommodate these learners’ needs.

Learners are admitted to the school from the age of three years to facilitate language acquisition as early as possible. Most of our learners are first exposed to Sign Language in school. The reciprocal language they acquire gives them a sense of self-worth and belonging as they encounter other learners and staff members with the same condition.

Learning life lessons in a community where they belong gives them the confidence that they too can contribute to society despite their disability

Beyond the Books

Transoranje School has hostel facilities catering to learners living far from the school. The hostel is home to approximately eighty learners. Admission to the hostel depends on the decision of the hostel committee based on certain criteria and the availability of space.

The school has free buses for learners in and around Pretoria. The following suburbs are on the bus route: Atteridgeville. Soshanguve, Mamelodi, and Olievenhoutbosch. Parents must ensure that learners can be picked up along the route.

60% of our learners come from impoverished backgrounds. The school can attend to the learners’ basic needs through the feeding scheme and the hostel, to make learning easier.

How To Register Your Child for Transoranje School For The Deaf

01.

The Department of Education in the Tswane district facilitates admissions. Parents can visit their nearest Department of Education District Office and request placement at a school for Deaf learners. Transoranje falls under the Tshwane South District.

The following documents will be requested from you:

  • A medical letter and audiogram with the diagnosis of deafness
  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Learner’s Road to Health Card
  • Parent’s Identity documents (SA or foreign)
  • Proof of residence
  • Work permit/asylum seeker documents for foreigners

When you want to transfer your child from another school, contact the school your child is in (the transferring school). The transferring school, the school the learner is in, must coordinate transfers. The transferring school can contact Transoranje for further details.

02.

Parents of deaf children can also contact the school directly to arrange an assessment for their child. The list of documents in 01. above will still be required.

03.

When the required documents reach the school from the Department or the parents, the parents will be contacted for a screening appointment date.

The screening assessment includes interviews and tests by various professionals on the school staff. This includes the Audiologist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist, Nurse, Occupational Therapist and Head of Department for the specific phase.

04.

After the screening, the admission team will decide if the learner is a candidate that will benefit from the curriculum offered at Transoranje School for the Deaf. The team includes the principal, the therapists, and the teachers.

05.

If the Transoranje School for the Deaf admission team agrees to the learner’s admission, they send the documents to the Department of Education to request approval for the learner’s admission. The Gauteng Department of Education must approve the placement before a learner can be admitted.

06.

The Department of Education will screen all relevant documents and once this is concluded the learner is assigned an admission number for a Learner with Special Educational Needs (LSEN).

To complete the process, they

  • sign off the form,
  • Assign a LESN Number to the child, and
  • inform the parent and the school.

07.

The parents are then contacted about the acceptance. The learner is only allowed in the school once they have their LESN Number from the department.
